Star Trek Into Darkness: A Creative PR Stunt

I have to admit, I'm not a Star Trek fan. I'm not even sure if I've ever watched any of the Star Trek movies. Nevertheless, I have to say "WOW", when I think of the latest PR stunt for the upcoming movie "Star Trek Into Darkness".

On 23rd March the "Earth Hour 2013" took place. You haven't heard of that? Well, me neither.

It was part of a WWF campaign in order to encourage people to take more care of our planet. This is why on 23rd March 2013 between 8:30pm and 9:30pm the lights illuminating famous landmarks worldwide as for example the Tower Bridge were switched off.

Paramount Pictures UK used this opportunity to promote the upcoming Star Trek movie. In cooperation with Ars Electronica Futurelab (Austria) 30 so-called "quadrocopters" were sent over London. They had LED lights on them and formed the Star Trek logo - Just before the lights were switched off and shortly before they were switched on again, Londoners could spot the logo in the sky.

I think this stunt was an extremely clever and creative move of Paramount Pictures UK. The movie itself is about the homecoming of the USS Enterprise crew and how they find the world in chaos. Of course, they try to fight against the dark forces and save the world. Therefore, the stunt perfectly fits the plot of the movie: The Earth Hour is an event which aims to encourage people to change their wasteful use of resources in favour of environmentally sustainable habits and thus save the world. Moreover, the PR stunt was creative, eye-catching and also a good opportunity for journalists to take photos. No surprise that it got an extensive media coverage.
